ABOUT THE NMVVRC NEEDS ASSESSMENT

This needs assessment is being conducted by Abt Associates by the National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center (NMVVRC) in partnership with the Boston School of Public Health. The NMVVRC is a joint project between the Medical University of South Carolina and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Why are we doing the needs assessment?

Mass violence affects the health of people. This needs assessment will help us understand how these shootings have affected the health of survivors. Then we can make recommendations about how to improve services following mass shootings.

How do I take part in this needs assessment?

You can take part in this assessment by going to the website listed or calling the toll-free number in your letter. There will be a User ID and password in the letter. Enter this information when you get to the web site to login and take the assessment.

How long will the needs assessment take?

The needs assessment will take about 35 minutes to complete.

What questions will you ask?

The questions in the needs assessment will ask about your opinions about mass shootings, and how the shooting may have affected your behavior. We will ask if you were directly or indirectly affected by the mass shooting. We will ask if you were offered any services. We will also ask how well you are doing emotionally today. We will also ask about the use of alcohol and other drugs.

Do I have to take part in this needs assessment?

No, taking part in this assessment is voluntary. You do not have to answer any questions that you do not want to, and you can leave this assessment at any time.

Are there any benefits to taking part in this needs assessment?

You can share your experiences and opinions. The information you give us will help us make recommendations on how to improve services following future mass violence incidents. You will also receive a $35 Gift Card for completing the assessment.

Are there any risks to taking part in this needs assessment?

Some of the questions are personal and it is possible that they may make you feel uncomfortable or upset. There are no right or wrong answers. You can skip any questions you do not want to answer. If you become upset, you can stop the assessment at any time.

Are my responses going to be confidential?

We will keep all your answers confidential, and we have a Privacy Certificate from the U.S. Justice Department. This means that your answers are legally protected and that we cannot be forced to release your identity as a participant or any of the information you give us. We will only use your name and address for your $35 gift card. We may also voluntarily report information to protect you or others from serious harm. Abt will share your results with NVVRC. We will not tell them who you are or where you live. Your answers will be completely anonymous. They will use your responses to improve services for others like you.
